Motor racing under lights today by Bernard Perera The first ever floodlit motor racing meet starts today at the Pannala International Circuit commencing at 6.00 p.m. The meet is organised by the Asian Motor Racing Club. The meet has already attracted 96 drivers and 30 riders. There will be three events for riders in three different categories while seven car events are lined up for the day. The spectators who gather at the Pannala circuit are sure to witness top class racing fare with all leading drivers and riders in action. A big battle is expected in the super car event with Aravinda Premadasa entering the event from back grid as he was unable to attend the time trials. He will have to use all his tactics and skills to cope with the pace of Dinesh Deheragoda, Dan Dissanayake and Nalin D. Perera who are expected to start the race as front runners. This event will definitely thrill the crowds. In the Ford Formulas a big battle for supremacy could be seen with the drivers of the calibre of Rohan de Silva, Dinesh Jayawardene, Ravi Mayadunne, M. Muthumari and the only Lady driver Shehara de Silva. If things go well veteran Rohan de Silva could dominate this event. Damien Goonetilleke and Maduranga Caldera will battle it out in the motor cycles events. A keen tussle is expected as many other riders too will go all out to make a name on this memorable day. The organisers also have made arrangements to give special awards for car owners for best body work, best interior work and for the well maintained car. The race meet will be followed by a beat show. |
