Mahanayake Theras to meet President, Opposition Leader to resolve ethnic issue

by L. B. Wijayasiri

The Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Mahavihara Chapter said yesterday that Mahanayake Theras of the Tri Nikayas will meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe soon to help the government and the opposition come to a consensus on the ethnic conflict.

The Mahanayake Thera said so when a deputation of the Maha Sangha led by Samastha Lanka Pavidi Sanvidhanaya President Ven. Prof. Kamburugamuwe Vajira Nayake Thera and Secretary Ven. Watinapaha Somananda Thera handed over to him a memorandum on the necessity to finding a solution to the ethnic conflict.

They expressed their views on the need of bringing the President and the Opposition together to bring about a common solution to the problem.

The Most Ven. Sri Sumangala Mahanayake Thera told the delegation that he was prepared to come forward in any national and religious issues and take firm steps to ensure the security of the nation and the religion.

He had been continuously advising the government and the opposition to work together in finding a solution to the ethnic conflict. In the event of their coming to a common decision acceptable to both parties and conveyed it to the LTTE, the latter would not be able to reject it in toto, the prelate said. Unfortunately some were not prepared to come to a common decision due to the fact that they were trying to take political advantage of the situation, he said. The Mahanayake Thera said the government alone could not find a solution to this national conflict.

The opposition's cooperation and assistance was of great importance. The Electronic and print media had been giving various opinions and views of intellectuals on this issue. The government and the opposition make use of the views in their deliberations in coming to a common consensus.

The ethnic problem should be solved in a way that people of all communities and religious groups could live in peace and harmony within one country, failure to bring peace in the country was because many leaders had been working with the objective of getting political advantage from the issue, the Most Ven. Sumangala Mahanayake Thera said.

The Most Ven. Sri Sumangala Mahanayake Thera expressed his displeasure over members of the Maha Sangha taking into active politics. The time was opportune to bring about a common decision on those matters through a Sangha convention since bringing about laws in the Parliament would not serve any purpose, he said.

Sanvidhanaya President Ven. Prof. Kamburugamuwe Vajira and Secretary Ven. Watinapaha Somananda Theras also spoke. The delegation also called on the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Ratanapala Buddharakkhitha Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter and had discussions after presenting the memorandum.
