New Zealand pacemen destroy Sri Lanka at cost AUCKLAND, Sunday (AFP) - New Zealand were left counting the cost after their seven wicket drubbing of Sri Lanka in the one-day international here Sunday, with injured paceman Kyle Mills in doubt for the second match and expectations of a Sri Lankan backlash. When Stephen Fleming won the toss he had no hesitation putting Sri Lanka into bat and the tourists were soon all at sea against the seaming white ball. Led by a hobbling Chris Cairns' four for 33 and early inroads from Daryl Tuffey and Kyle Mills, Sri Lanka were skittled for 141 in 42 overs before Fleming's 77 not out led the chase home with a full 17 overs to spare. Mills' excellent spell of one for 24 off eight overs on the seamer-friendly wicket ended when he complained of back soreness, leaving him doubtful for the second match in Napier on Wednesday. The injury flared in the third over but Fleming encouraged Mills to continue before the injury coolled down. "As soon as he stopped he was gone so it was important to get as much out of him as we could," Fleming said. Cairns also threw a scare into the New Zealand camp when he slipped and fell when bowling just his third ball. His right leg went from under him and he lay prone on the pitch, appearing to have a serious a serious injury. He later played down the incident although the ankle required strapping. "It was a little bit sore but other than pride, that was about it." Marvan forecast's Lankan revival As New Zealand cantered to victory, Sri Lanka sorely missed the injured Nuwan Zoysa as a bowling partner for Chaminda Vaas, although captain Marvan Atapattu said the left-arm seamer, who has a dislocated finger, was an outside chance of playing in Napier. "I'm sure he will be very close to taking the field," said Atapattu who forecast a Sri Lankan revival."We're not going to get bowled out for 140 every day and we'll put up a better show next time." Fleming, however, doubted the tourists could turn their performance around immediately. "I do expect them to improve if we give them the opportunity, but if we can maintain a roll... keep them down, then the series will get away on them," he said. "That's what's so pleasing about today, they'll walk away still not feeling used to New Zealand conditions." SRI LANKA INNINGS S. Jayantha lbw b Tuffey 0 S. Jayasuriya c Marshall b Cairns 43 M.
