New playing format for table tennis tournaments At a meeting held by the officials of Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka and coaches of the country, it was decided that the existing playing format of tournaments was very taxing for players and thus deteriorates the quality of the matches. Hence it was decided to conduct all future tournaments in a different manner that is detailed herein, which as a pilot project will be implemented at the first open ranked tournament that would be conducted by the TTASL for the year 2005. The TTASL envisages the new format of play would benefit the players in the following manner: a. Improvement in playing quality. b. Number of days taken to conduct the tournament will reduce from three days to two days. c. Players can choose their best events and concentrate more on them. d. Players very specially school children can finish the matches early and concentrate on their studies etc. Changes adopted: 1. Only two singles events will be permitted in age group categories. At present players are permitted to enter three (3) singles events in age group categories. It was observed that players are exhausted when the games progresses as they have to concentrate and play in several matches. Hence it has been decided now to permit only two events in the age group categories. 2. Introduction of a qualification round in all events. Every event will be held in 2 stages, mainly: 1st stage (qualification stage), 2nd stage (main competition). a. A qualification Stage which would leave out the first 16 ranked players in case of singles events and eight (8) in case of doubles events. Separate draws will be held for the ranked players and another draw will be held for the qualification round. The draws will be held according to the dates in the entry form. b. The players identified and who have qualified from the qualifying stage of the tournament will now move on to play with the ranked players in the main draw. 3. Determining the First sixteen ranked players in singles events and the first eight ranked combination in the doubles events. The rankings will be determined according to the recent ranking as stipulated by the TTASL after the conclusion of every open ranking tournament. The updated ranking list will serve as the sole document to ascertain the names of those excluded from the qualifying stage. Every effort will be made to take into account the running order of rank in each category should there be any difficulty in determining these ranked players in the very first tournament. 4. Awarding Ranking points under the new method.Due to the new changes in the draw 32 players (i.e - 16 ranked and 16 qualified players), the following points will be awarded to the players. 5. Year end Ranking Players are encouraged to take part in several Open ranking tournaments conducted through out the year by the TTASL or its affiliated clubs and associations. However the year end ranking will be tabulated in the following manner. Less than five tournaments conducted per year - Total ranking points minus the worst ranking points of one (1) tournament. More than five tournaments conducted per year - Total ranking points minus the worst ranking points of two (2) tournaments. 6. Non participation of ranked players Ranked players who have entered for the tournament and once the draw has been concluded, have without valid reasons refrained from playing will forfeit ten ranking points from their respective ranking total for the year. Should a player not play on medical grounds, then he or she is required to produce a medical certificate from the sports unit of the Ministry of sports.
