by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Russian Government has sent a team of 57 experts in two planes to help with rescue operations in Sri Lanka. Two IL 76 Russian planes which flew from Ramenskov Airport, Moscow landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake around midnight on Monday, Chief Administrative Officer, Russian Embassy in Colombo Buddapriya Ramanayake told the Daily News yesterday. He said the two Russian planes with a 57 member team of personnel including doctors, technical staff and 20 experts who are trained in disaster management operations and special helicopter, three jeeps together with six sniffer dogs have also been ferried by these two plains to assist in the operations. In addition, the two planes have transported 110 large tents and 2200 folding beds, he said. Following a request made by the Sri Lankan Government, immediate steps were taken by the Russian Government to send a special team with two planes promptly to provide relief measures to the displaced victims in Sunday's tidal wave disaster. The Russian Government is also willing to provide more assistance to the Government in this national disaster, he said. Three all-terrain jeeps flown down are equipped with modern gadgetry and satellite phone facilities and is designed to function under all disaster circumstances. Sniffer dogs will accompany these 20 experts to check for survivors trapped in houses and buildings destroyed by tidal waves, he said. Four disaster management experts and one sniffer dog will travel in each all-terrain jeep to rescue and assist the people in affected areas. The team of Russian experts will commence their rescue operation in Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Hambantota and Ambalangoda areas, he said. |
