Japan extends US $1 million financial assistance and additional emergency aid to Sri Lanka

The Government of Japan extended USD 1 million (approximately Rs. 144 million) in cash to the Government of Sri Lanka to be utilised for Tsunami victims in all affected areas.

In addition to the above assistance, initial emergency assistance of Yen 15,532,000 (approximately Rs. 15.2 million) was already provided on 27 December, and the second emergency assistance of USD 100,000 (approximately 14.4 million) was pledged today. These assistances include urgently requested items such as, tents, blankets, generators, water tanks etc, states an Embassy of Japan press release issued last evening.

Further to these aid materials, 2400 metric tons of rice was made available to meet the immediate food needs of the affected communities through the World Food Programme as part of the food assistance already provided by the Government of Japan.

The Government of Japan has also dispatched a 20 member Disaster Relief Team to Sri Lanka for assisting the Sri Lankan authorities to rescue and relief operations. The team which arrived 27th December will be deployed in the Eastern coastal areas as requested by the Government of Sri Lanka.

The Government of Japan is further assessing the situation in Sri Lanka and would provide necessary assistance towards reconstruction and rehabilitation required for restoring the socio-economic activities in the affected areas.
