UNICEF in Sri Lanka has started the distribution of emergency supplies for people displaced from their homes by the tidal wave. The supplies include 30,000 bed sheets, 30,000 sleeping mats, 30,000 towels as well as soap and water bottles for a 100,000 people. These are being taken by lorry to the worst affected areas in the north-east, east and south east of the country. Two plane loads of additional 65 tons non food relief materials will arrive in Colombo today. These will include medical kits for 15 hospitals, tents and shelter materials as well as oral dehydration salts. UNICEF's representative in Sri Lanka, Ted Chaiban, said 'we are getting requests for everything from children's clothes to latrines and shelter materials. This shows the magnitude of the disaster that has struck so many people. In some cases everything they had has been destroyed. It is going to be a massive task to make sure that disease does not spread amongst children in these circumstances and enough is done so they have a chance to get quickly on with their lives'. |
