The Government yesterday directed relevant authorities to bury all the bodies of victims of the Sunday's tidal wave disaster which have not been identified and not accepted by any relatives or by a guardian, as the body count reached close to 13,000 by noon yesterday two days after the disaster. Public Security and Law and Order Ministry Secretary Tilak Ranaviraja told the Daily News yesterday that Government Agents of the respective districts were given instructions to bury all the unidentified bodies after a taking detailed report about these bodies including the physical features of the victims. He said the Justice Ministry has taken steps to dispatch Magistrates and City Coroners to Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Jaffna to facilitate this process. The photographs and documents will be secured at the hospitals, police stations and the district secretariats of the respective districts so that relatives could make use of them to obtain the victims' death certificates. Meanwhile, 200 unidentified bodies in the Hambantota district were due to be buried yesterday. |
