Ampara death toll tops 5000

Five thousand nine hundred people lost their lives during the tidal waves (Tsunami) at Ampara District and the death toll is on the increase according to Ampara District Government Agent H. M. Herath Abeyweera.

Meanwhile there are 400 bodies lying at Kalmunai Ashraff Memorial Hospital and Kalmunai District Hospital and they are on the verge of rotting the Hospital authorities say.

The Government Agent Herath Abeyweera said these bodies will be buried soon. According to Government Agent there are 70 Refugee Camps in Ampara District and more than half of the camp are functioning in Sammanthurai Town which has not been affected.

Deputy Ministers M. I. Anver Ismail and Hussain Baila have convened a special meeting at Sammanthurai DS office and regarding relief works.
