Korea expresses condolences and provides relief

The Government of the Republic of Korea, whilst extending its deepest sympathy and condolences to the Government and the people of Sri Lanka, in particular to the victims and bereaved families of the disaster, also wishes the Government and people of Sri Lanka the speedy rehabilitation of the country and for the relief of the sufferings and distress of those affected by the tragic disaster, states a Embassy of Korea press release.

On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Korea, President of the Republic of Korea Roh Moo-hyun, conveyed a message of consolation to President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Ban Ki-moon, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea to Lakshman Kadirgamar, his Sri Lankan counterpart.

The following are some of Korea's relief efforts in progress for the Sri Lankan Government and people affected by the disaster:

The Government of the Republic of Korea has decided to provide a grant of US $ 150,000 from this year's government budget for immediate tidal wave (tsunami) relief in response to an urgent international appeal made by the Sri Lankan Government, in view of the strong bilateral relations existing between Sri Lanka and Korea and on humanitarian ground. The Ambassador of Korea to Sri Lanka. Lim Jae-hong will handover the Korean Government's contributions to the appropriate authority as soon as possible.

The Government of the Republic of Korea will dispatch an emergency disaster relief team and a medical team to Sri Lanka within this week.

The 21-member emergency disaster relief team, which is organized by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), will administer relief operations such as prevention of epidemics, restoration of infrastructure and exhumation of the dead for a period of 10 days.

The 15-member medical team, which is organized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, includes doctors, nurses and pharmacists from the National Medical Center of Korea.

Lim Jae-hong and his Korean staff in the Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka contributed from their salaries Rs. 200,000 for those struck by the disaster and handed it over to the Prime Minister's Office yesterday.

The Korean Residents Association in Sri Lanka has decided to stop the year-end function scheduled for December 30 and donate Rs. 500,000 allocated for the function to share the grief of those suffering due to the disaster.
