| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | UNP ready to give all assistance to govt. to provide relief - Ranil by Ariyaratne Ganegoda UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that his party was ready to give all assistance to the Government to provide relief to the people, the victims of the December 26 tidal wave which had caused huge damage. Addressing a media conference at his office in Colombo after touring Galle, Matara, Kalutara and Panadura, Wickremesinghe further said the unexpected turn of events had caused loss of valuable life and destroyed property and was a terrible blow to the national economy. He told the media that he was deeply moved after seen the dead and those suffer the consequence of the Tsunami tidal wave in the Matara and Galle districts and had conveyed to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse what he seen and heard from the people in this sad situation and after having discussed matters with the two GAs. Mr. Wickremesinghe said that as the disaster has caused severe damage to people and properties in seven countries, the international community has got together and had drawn up a common program to provide assistance to countries affected by the tidal wave including Sri Lanka. The Opposition Leader also stressed the need to draw up a program to provide necessary essential goods such as food, water and medicine and other facilities to make their life better and look into their mental health as well. He said that he would attend all meetings held and assure their support to rebuild the country. UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema was also present at the media conference. UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will tour the North and East today (December 29) to meet the people in camps, the UNP sources said. |
