Ministry allocates Rs.20m for rehabilitation

By Irangika Range and Anjana Samarasinghe

The Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government has decided to allocate Rs.20 million to assist the disaster rehabilitation program of the Government. This will help in reconstructing houses and providing sanitary facilities for the victims.

The Ministry hopes to raise this amount from all local government institutions which were unaffected and other local and foreign organisations.

Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon told a press conference yesterday that the All Local Government Institutions Employees' Trade Union has pledged Rs. 1,00,000 for the purpose.

The Minister has also appointed a committee to ensure proper utilisation of the money to provide the maximum benefits for the victims.

He said it is important to set up a disaster management fund as a long-tem solution for natural disasters such as cyclones, earthslips, floods and tidal waves. He said that eighty-four local government institutions have been affected by the tidal waves.

He also said health and environmental problems in the affected areas are increasing. "Therefore, we should provide adequate drinking water facilities and engage in clearing debris and reconstructing roads.
