Bogollagama highlights export potential in tailoring sector

Minister of Advanced Technology and National Enterprise Development Rohitha Bogollagama conducted a discussion with the office-bearers of the newly established Sri Lanka Master Tailors Association at his Ministry last week.

The Minister invited the views of the Association to develop the business of custom Tailoring and the Master Tailor Establishments in Sri Lanka to match their counterparts in developed countries in every aspect of tailoring. He said that the Sri Lankan tailoring Industry must benchmark the level of world acceptance and superior technology of the UK-London based tailoring.

Minister Bogollagama outlined his plans in assisting the association to develop professional careers and business prospects by facilitating access to advanced technology and provision of experts for training existing designers, cutters and tailors. He also highlighted the vast export potential of tailoring in the service sector which is a key sector that will be developed by the Ministry.

The President of the Sri Lanka Master Tailors Association B.N. De Silva emphasized the need to train tailors and develop them into highly skilled professionals in the field. He also explained the training activities conducted by the Academy of Tailoring established by him.

The Vice President Luxman Guruge, Joint Secretaries Hussain Sadique and C. Wijesekera Joint Treasurers Mrs. Nanayakkara and Lal Jayatissa and Chief Organiser T. Udagedara represented the Master Tailors Association at this meeting and expressed their views in developing and promoting the industry.

The Minister intends to conduct a national survey to find out the exact needs of the industry and to grade the existing establishments in order to prepare a policy paper in developing and promoting tailoring as a professional business.

The Minister will set up a Business Cluster to develop and promote tailoring and its related activities which will be co-ordinated and headed by Kingsley Bernard, Advisor to the Ministry of Advanced Technology and National Enterprise Development.
