SLT update

Since December 29 Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) technical staff have restored its services in Hakmana, Yatiyana, Kamburupitiya, Telijjawila, Akuressa, Udugama, Nagoda and Baddegama. SLT services are partially restored in Tangalle, Tissamaharama, Ambalantota, Kataragama, Middeniya, Weeraketiya, Beliatta and Beruwala areas.

SLT services are still not available in Hambantota, Hungama, Angunakolapalessa, Suriyawewa, Dikwella and Kosgoda areas.

However SLT has restored essential services to the Police, the GAs offices, Divisional Secretariats and the hospitals in affected areas. SLT staff are working around the clock to re-establish the country's national telecommunication network to assist the national disaster recovery efforts.

Business Chamber of Commerce pledges help

The Business Chamber of Commerce has expressed its profound shock and sorrow on the catastrophic event that devastated our country, a press release said. Many of our members have already contributed in several ways both individually and collectively to provide relief and supply the needs of those affected.

The Chamber on its part too has been participating in this effort.

As an institution we are ever conscious of the need to join hands with the Government and the Private Sector in the national endeavour to rebuild the nation and overcome this enormous national crisis, the release said.

Leading Chambers busy with relief work

The Relief Coordination Program initiated by the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sri Lanka (FCCISL) and its islandwide chamber network immediately after the tidal wave hit has been progressing covering a number of essential aspects of providing relief.

The FCCISL set up a special Relief Coordination Unit at its Secretariat at Vauxhall Lane, Colombo 2 to implement a co-ordinated and structured relief program. The Unit is headed by the Secretary General, Samantha Abeywickrama and activities are closely coordinated by the office-bearers.

The National Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka (NCCSL's) District Associations of Small and Medium Enterprises (DASME) of Matara and Kalutara are coordinating the assistance to the people affected in Matara, Kalutara and Hambanthota areas.

Keerthi Gunawardena, President of the Matara DASME, G S Fernando, President and Lalith Perera, Treasurer of Kalutara DASME will be coordinating the distribution of donated items in these areas.

Emirates rolls out big relief operation

Emirates Airline will provide humanitarian relief and aid to the survivors of the catastrophic tsunamis of last Sunday in South Asia.

The first 100 tents of a shipment of 1,000 donated by a local Sri Lankan benefactor have already been dispatched by Emirates SkyCargo from Dubai to Colombo, as well as five tonnes of foodstuffs from Dubai to the Maldives.

Over the next few days, the airline will procure, provide and transport relief materials, either free or at extremely reduced charges.

TAASL donation

The Travel Agents' Association of Sri Lanka (TAASL) has made a donation to purchase essential items to the Tidal Wave Relief Fund set up by the Independent Television Network.

According to the President of the TAASL Nihal Perera, the association has also decided to donate part of the advertising profits collected from their Travel Trade directory, to the Tsunami victims.

In addition the Malaysian Travel Agents Association has also pledged their support and have requested as to how they could help.

"We will reply them today," he said.
