The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society continues its humanitarian work in bringing assistance to those affected by the recent Tsunami, which occurred on Sunday. The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) has set up a special unit at its Colombo branch with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to trace missing persons of the tragic events of Sunday. The Unit can be contacted on 011-5420100/105. Hundreds of SLRCS volunteers have been deployed in affected areas providing assistance. SLRCS has dispatched 21 volunteer doctors to Hambantota, Matara, Galle, Kalutara, Trincomalee and Gampaha with medical supplies. In Batticaloa 100 SLRCS volunteers have been deployed to work in welfare centres. More than 150 SLRCS volunteers engaged in providing first aid services, mobile health services, evacuating dead bodies, transferring wounded and the distributing relief items in Trincomalee. The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and International Committee of Red Cross support the SLRCS in its efforts. The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has opened a special bank account for those who want to make donations to assist victims.
