TT players' houses damaged by tidal waves The Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka has called for an emergency meeting for all parents, coaches, players and well wishes on the 2nd of January 2005 at St. John's College Nugegoda at 10.00 a.m. This meeting has been summoned to brief them on the situation and conditions of the Table Tennis players both national and school players who have been affected by the recent disaster. The houses of South Asian Games Poolists, Chalitha Ranjana (Current National Champion) and his brother K. S. T. Lakshan and Ms. Sanduni Kawithilaka have been damaged very badly while Ms. Chandi Hansa's house has been completely destroyed. The Secretary of the TTASL Chandana Perera had visited some of the players along the coastal belt of Ambalangoda and its outskirts to distribute essential items to the affected players and their families. However more help will be needed just to get these players back on their feet again. Perera is thankful to all those who contributed and answered his call of assistance within a matter of 2 hours notice. He extends his profound thanks to some of the parents of Table Tennis players from Vidura College Colombo, Musaeus College Colombo, Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo and St. John's College, Nugegoda. All items collected were distributed the same day among the affected table tennis players and the families. Help has also been sought from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) who have pledged to come to our assistance. Postponement of Prize Distribution The prize distribution of the 58th Junior and Senior National Championships along with the Ashok Melvani Memorial Championships which was to be held on the 31st of December 2004, has been postponed due to the current situation in the country. The new date will be notified in due course. The Chrys Gunaratne Memorial TT Tournament 2005 which was to be held from the 14th to 16th January 2005, has been postponed due to the current situation in the country. The new dates will be notified in due course. Prime Minister visits dilapidated TT hall at Race Course Colombo Pool practices for players preparing for the South Asian Games 2005 commenced on 25th December 2005. While these players were doing their physical fitness on 26th December, they were met by the. Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapakse, who too had come to the race course grounds to do his morning exercises. The secretary of the TTASL Chandana Perera, the National Coach P. D. Ratnasiri and the Manager to the SA games team M. M. M. Lafeer, invited the Prime Minister to the race course TT hall and showed him the condition in which the players were practising. The premier was also briefed that the Hall is now the property of the CMC who have given eviction notice to the TTASL and issued an ultimatum for the removal of all equipment. Prime Minister Rajapakse was also briefed on the request made by the TTASL to Ministers Dinesh Gunawardane and Anura Kumara Dissanayake requesting for a plot of land to build its own Headquarters. The premier promised to look into the matter. |
