"In order to further relief the pains and misery of our Sri Lanka friends who have been suffering from the catastrophic tidal waves of 26th December 2004, the Government of the People's Republic of China decides to render additional emergency assistance worth 15 million Renminbi Yuan or approximately 185 million Sri Lankan Rupees to Sri Lanka. The special aircraft carrying this second batch of disaster relief materials including tents, medicine, foods will arrive in Colombo in the evening of January 4. In consultation with the Sri Lankan Government, a 14-member medical team sent by the Chinese Government has arrived in Colombo in the early morning of January 2. Upon arrival, this medical team has proceeded to Galle to help the local people. With a view to expressing the friendly sentiments of the military forces of the People's Republic of China towards the military forces of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of National Defense decides to donate 150,000 US Dollars in cash to the Ministry of Defence of Sri Lanka for disaster relief assistance. The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC), the only national Red Cross society and humanitarian social relief organization in the People's Republic of China, has donated 100,000 US Dollars in cash to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society. The RCSC sincerely hopes that humble contribution could be made to our Sri Lankan friends in their fight against present calamity," states a People's Republic of China press release. |
