Sam Gunaratne wins Stableford golf c'ship by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports correspondent Former Vidyartha College cricketer now turned golfer Sam Gunaratne won the last Stableford golf championship for the year at the Victoria Golf and Country Resort by getting nett 37 in a remarkable way at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella. With the rains making the greens greener and the fairways looked a billiard table top but it was difficult off the rough and the golfers had to use their skills to come to terms with it. Sam Gunaratne in his success trail first got a hole in the fourth and he embellished this with four birdies and five under brought him a rich haul of 26 points which no doubt paved the way to his victory. Sam Gunaratne who returned to the island recently after playing cricket in England during a brief holiday said that it is nice to be back in form. Others to excel in this Stableford competition were Peter Wells Nett 33, Sirath Kasthuriratne Nett 28, Ian Tait Nett 27, S. Boyle Nett 22. |
