US Secretary of State Colin Powell will visit the tsunami-ravaged areas of Sri Lanka today. Powell will also meet Sri Lankan leaders for talks on the rehabilitation and reconstruction effort. He is among top international figures visiting the country to asses the tsunami damage and reconstruction needs. World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn will visit Sri Lanka on January 8 to have a first-hand view of the destruction to lives, livelihoods and property caused by the tsunami. His visit will coincide with that of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. They will also hold discussions on the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts with Sri Lankan leaders. US Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D. who arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday, called on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga Senator Mary Landrieu is accompanying him. They will visit Galle and Kalmunai. Senator Frist, a physician by profession, is interested in the medical and humanitarian aspect of the relief program. Among other top personalities visiting Sri Lanka this week is World Health Organisation Director General Lee Jong-wook. He will visit tsunami-affected areas to inspect the conditions. |
