Japan grants US$ 80 million

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced at the Tsunami Summit in Jakarta yesterday, that Japan would further provide US$ 80 million (approximately Rs. 8 billion) to the Government of Sri Lanka under its Non-Project Grant Aid for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in tsunami affected areas in the country.

The Embassy of Japan said yesterday the grant aid is extended especially towards restoring the disaster hit areas and bring normalcy to the country. See page 21

The people and the Government of Japan are deeply concerned of the destruction caused to the people and to the economy of Sri Lanka, as a result of the tsunami tidal waves that engulfed the coastal areas of the country to devastation.

The Government of Japan has explored all possible means of providing the required support towards relief and rehabilitation activities of the Government of Sri Lanka, aimed at restoring the lives of the people and towards continuation of its development efforts, the Embassy said.

Taking into account the emergency situation, as a special measure, in this instant the proceeds of this Non-Project Grant Aid Scheme could be utilised for the imports as well as for local purchases of large variety of goods, and towards obtaining services, such as construction of temporary housing, required for restoration efforts in the country, as agreed upon the two Governments.

A mission is in the country assessing the goods and services that could be included under this scheme in line with the restoration needs of the tsunami affected areas.

Based on the discussions with the authorities concerned, the Mission would recommend to the Government of Japan any additional items that need to be included under this grant aid scheme.

This grant aid is in addition to the equipment and material already provided under emergency assistance valued at approximately Rs. 14.4 million, 2,400 metric tons of rice provided through the World Food Programme for the displaced and US$1 million in cash provided earlier, since the tsunami disaster hit this country.

Japan also took immediate steps to dispatch two Disaster Relief Medical Teams to assist in rescue and relief operations soon after the disaster.
