by Sudarshana Perera The United States yesterday pledged its long-term support to re-build Tsunami devastated areas and to set up an early Tsunami warning system in the region saying that the impact of the disaster is incompressible. Senator Bill Frist, told journalists in Colombo yesterday that they would work closely with Sri Lankan Government, non governmental organisations and the military to rehabilitate and reconstruct the affected areas and its top priority was to help re-build the lives of the displaced and traumatised people in Sri Lanka. Senator Frist along with Senator Mary Landrieu toured the affected areas yesterday in Galle, Kalmunai and other affected areas. Frist said that US Marines will carry out and coordinate relief operations in Sri Lanka while assisting Sri Lanka Army to better perform distribution of aid and reconstruction. Senator Landrieu said US based disaster teams are already attending to medical needs of the people and added that the relief operation should be focused to heal the emotional and spiritual wounds that have been left by the disaster. "We are optimistic that our joint operation will also help displaced children to find a better shelter and we are very concerned about the displaced children", she said. According to reports, the US with its humanitarian agencies has arranged US $ 13,427,488 for immediate relief and reconstruction activities. |
