Minister of Urban Development and Water Supply and Deputy Minister of Education Dinesh Gunawardana met Vice-President Catherine Sieirra and representatives of the World Bank at its Headquarters in Washington on 03.01.2005 to channel more foreign assistance to support the short and long term post-tsunami rehabilitation programs in Sri Lanka, states press release from the Ministry of Urban Development and Water Supply. The Minister explained in detail the effects of the tsunami diaster on the lives of the people and the material losses they had to endure. The World Bank team expressed their profound sorrow on the suffering of the people of Sri Lanka and indicated their deep commitment to support the efforts to re-build the country. A team from the World Bank has already being directed to visit Sri Lanka in this regard. Drinking water scheme, sanitary systems, urban development and re-instituting trade and market places were considered high priority issues. The World Bank representatives assured early action to expand the community water supply and sanitation projects initiated by the Ministry of Urban Development and Water Supply. The Rain water Harvesting Project initiated on a concept of the Minister gained special praise and was valued by the World Bank team. On behalf of the President and the people of Sri Lanka the Minister thanked all the world leaders, foreign countries, organisations and individuals who are extending their hand of friendship to Sri Lanka in this hour of need. The Second Secretary (Commerce) of Sri Lanka High Commission in America Ameena Shafie, was also associated in this discussion. |
