The Salvation Army is making plans and investigating possibilities to begin a building program as the country moves from the emergency relief phase to rebuilding and rehabilitation in the Galle district, states media release from The Salvation Army. A team of Salvation Army International Emergency Services specialists has arrived in the country to help the Sri Lankan Salvation Army begin the planning to rebuild community. "We are not interested in just building houses, we are wanting to build relationship and community," said the leader of the team, Captain Mike McKee. A comprehensive needs analysis will precede the building so that not only will the people be rehoused, but there will be suitable project offered that will address issues of income generation, women's and children's issues, HIV Aids awareness program, Community Centres and other appropriate programs. As the plans for building these new communities progress, this doesn't signal the end of Salvation Army commitment to bring aid to the thousands of people displaced by the tragedy. Salvation Army relief workers will arrive in jaffna to assist local Salvation Army staff with continued deliveries of relief supplies. As the crisis abates, and the extent of physical damage and emotional trauma is revealed The Salvation Army is dedicated to fulfilling its international mission; "to meet human needs in (God's) name without discrimination". We are committed to the rebuilding of community in partnership with all people of Sri Lanka, regardless of race or religion, and for however long it takes, he said. |
