showers, the Sri Lankan coastline witnessed the devastating impact of a
tsunami, hitherto unknown phenomenon to many Sri Lankans. A tsunami is one
of the many coastal hazards which Mother Nature can unleash. The name
tsunami is after a Japanese word for storm/harbour waves. These are also
referred to as tidal waves although they are not related directly to the
