by Manjula Fernando The visiting US Secretary of State Colin Powell said yesterday joint
efforts on the relief front could be elevated to a political effort to
achieve lasting peace.Following a short visit to devastated areas in Galle
and Southern parts last afternoon, Powell, the first top level US leader
to visit the country since 1972, said: "We hope that all Sri Lanka
would come together during this crisis and work together. This we hope
would lead to the resolution of political issues related to the peace
process." Annan, Wolfensohn to tour tsunami-hit areas UN Secretary General Kofi Annan arrived in Colombo yesterday evening
for a tour of areas battered by the December 26 tsunamis. Annan, who
arrived from Indonesia, was met at the Bandaranaike International Airport
by Finance Minister Dr Sarath Amunugama.
Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin will visit areas stricken by the
tsunami disaster in Thailand and Sri Lanka later this month, an official
said. Martin will amend a previously scheduled trip to Asia to visit Sri
Lanka, the destination of a Canadian disaster relief team which left on
Thursday, and Thailand, where most of the 146 Canadians still missing were
on vacation. SWRD 106th birth anniversary The 106th birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D.
Bandaranaike falls today. The commemoration ceremony will be held at the
