US aircraft carrier heads to Sri Lanka

US aircraft carrier USS Bonhomme Richard will arrive at the southern coast of Sri Lanka in the next three to five days to carry out relief work in the tsunami-hit island, a US official said yesterday.

The vessel, carrying 1,000 US marines and 20 transport helicopters for humanitarian work, will reach the battered island a few days after US Secretary of State Colin Powell finishes his day-long tour of the island Friday.

"I would say the ship will arrive in the next three to five days," US embassy spokesman Chris Long said.

Dozens of US marines have already arrived in Sri Lanka and are setting up camp in southern regions of the country where they will carry out relief work.

"More than a dozen (more) marines left today from Colombo to Galle where they will carry out preliminary surveys," Long told AFP.

Galle was devastated in the December 26 tsunami tragedy that killed at least 30,615 people in Sri Lanka.
