| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Hakeem meets Arab, Muslim diplomats Sri Lanka Muslim congress national leader Rauff Hakeem met with Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Muslim countries in Colombo and appealed to them to arrange relief assistance to the Sri Lankan tsunami victims also through non-governmental organisations in their countries in addition to the relief assistance from their respective governments, states a press release issued by the Muslim Congress. Hakeem met them recently at the Colombo Continental Hotel. Ambassadors and High Commissioners including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Malaysia and Maldives attended the meeting. The SLMC leader appraised them of the mammoth destructions of lives and properties caused by the tsunami killer waves and has requested for early assistance for undertake short, medium and long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction works in the affected areas. The foreign envoys were also appraised of details of the destructions and losses which were collected by the SLMC and eye-witness reports of Mr. Rauff hakeem himself. The foreign envoys expressed their deep bereavement over the overwhelming tragedy that has struck coastal belt of Sri Lanka and promised all possible assistance and co-operation toward rehabilitation and reconstruction activities. |
