UN readies long-term plans for sri Lanka by Manjula Fernando United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan yesterday stressed that the
aid pledged for disaster hit countries by the international community must
be in addition to the proposed millennium development funds. Hosting a
media conference at the Presidential Secretariat at noon yesterday, to
wrap up his 48 hour visit to Sri Lanka, Annan said: "I hope all the
money that had been pledged would be additional and one would not deplete
the millennium account for emergency or humanitarian assistance." Reconstruction a priority - President Reconstruction work after the tsunami was now a priority and would get
under way shortly, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga told BBC
Television yesterday. In a satellite video interview with the BBC from
Colombo, President Kumaratunga said: "We are now engaged in planning
for the reconstruction effort, which we want to start off on January 15. Annan hopes to celebrate peace Responding to a question whether he regretted not being able to tour
uncleared areas in the North and East, Annan said he was here for less
than 48 hours and he had done quite a lot during this short period. German Foreign Minister here on Tuesday German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, visiting the countries most
affected by the Tsunami disaster, will be in Sri Lanka on Tuesday to
discuss relief efforts and reconstruction, the Embassy of Germany said
yesterday. Tsunami damage to Fisheries Ministry assets exceed Rs.50 billion by Uditha Kumarasinghe The tsunami tidal wave disaster has caused a monumental damage to
assets of the Fisheries Ministry running into over Rs.50 billion while
