Trains beyond Kalutara in next two weeks

by Rajmi Manatunga

Train operations on the coastal railway line damaged by the tsunami will resume beyond Kalutara within the next two weeks following repairs to the track.

Transport Minister Felix Perera said that given the pace at which reconstruction activities are carried out it will be possible to extend train operations up to Aluthgama earlier than expected.

"Employees of the Railways Department are engaged in reconstructing the damaged rail tracks and railway stations. Their dedication to restore the disrupted service is commendable," he said.

According to the Railways Department, around 1000 employees have been deployed for the renovation of damaged sections of the coastal railway line.

The railway trade unions have also volunteered to assist the reconstruction work.

Among the damages to be attended to before extending the service to Aluthgama are the renovation of rail tracks washed off at Payagala, Maggona and Beruwala and the reconstruction of the two railway stations at Payagala destroyed by the tidal waves.

The Transport Ministry said that a special bus service to Aluthgama, Galle and Matara will operate from the Kalutara South railway station to transport commuters until the train service is fully restored.
