by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Ministry has given permanent appointments to 1,443 graduates who have been recruited to the State service under the Government's graduate training scheme. Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake handed appointment letters to these graduates at a ceremony held at the National Youth Centre on Tuesday. The Minister addressing graduates said they expect a more people- friendly service from the State service and free from bribery and corruption. He requested all graduates to extend their fullest support to rebuild the country without considering salary or time. "Today, the country has faced the worst ever natural disaster. Over 30,000 people have died while over one million have been displaced as a result of this unprecedented natural calamity. This disaster has become a challenge to us. Most of the developed countries in the world faced this kind of challenges. Therefore, the present challenge faced by the country can also be met through joint efforts." The Minister said there was a period where State sector recruitment was suspended and attempts to weaken the country's State sector. The UPFA Government decided to give state sector jobs to 42,000 unemployed graduates, he said. The Government took an immediate decision to seek the assistance of youth to rebuild the national economy by strengthening the State sector. This helped the Government to eliminate the frustration among graduates due to unemployment. I should also thank the Finance Ministry for taking measures to provide employment to all these 42,000 graduates, he said. |
