by Anjana Gamage Minister of Industry, Investment Promotion and Tourism Anura Bandaranaike has decided to establish 17 tourist zones in locations where land damage occurred in the Tsunami tragedy, a spokesman to the Tourism Ministry told the "Daily News". According to the Tourism Ministry sources, it has also decided to strictly enforce present coast conservation laws when establishing these tourist zones. However the Minister has also instructed the authorities to make proper assessments when hotels are constructed in these zones and has advised the relevant authorities to follow the standard rules of building constructions too. Meanwhile, the Minister has also decided to establish a tourist police post in each tourism zone and further discussion with the IGP on this subject will be held shortly. Presently the authorities have noted that the Hikkaduwa police station did not serve the tourism sector in that area due to its location. Therefore, the Tourism Ministry has decided to give priority to convert this police station to a modern complex with the latest technological facilities and half of the renovation cost will be borne by the Tourism Ministry as well. |
