British policemen here to trace affected nationals

by Sarath Malalasekera

Two Senior British Police Officers arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday to assist the Sri Lankan police team to trace and obtain all the relevant particulars regarding the 274 British nationals who had suffered following the recent tsunami.

IGP Chandra Fernando agreed to the request made by the British High Commission in Colombo to send the two senior British Police officers to ascertain more details about British nationals who had visited Sri Lanka during the months of November and December last year.

DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne, who is in charge of the Police Disaster Management Team Control Centre, yesterday told the 'Daily News' that 28 bodies of foreign nationals are lying at the Colombo Police Morgue.

Three bodies of the train victims were recovered yesterday at Meetiyagoda. These bodies had also been transported to the Police Morgue.

More details about the foreign nationals could be obtained from Crimes Division Director Senior SP Alfred Wijewardena on 2431346 or 2421111 - Ext 340.

'We have obtained photographs and fingerprints of foreign nationals who were affected in the tsunami.' These particulars could be obtained from the Crimes Division Director A. Wijewardene.

DIG Wickremaratne appealed to the public to be vigilant and to inform the special unit of any attempts by miscreants to prey on innocent victims.

Wickremaratne also directed all officers in charge of police stations in the country to remove all damaged vehicles which were caught in the waves to police station premises until they are claimed by the registered owners.

"The police believe that several unscrupulous persons were preparing forged documents to claim the abandoned vehicles," DIG Wickremaratne added.
