by Rajmi Manatunga The Transport Ministry is exploring the possibility of constructing an express railway line along the Southern expressway from Colombo to Matara. A Ministry spokesman told the Daily News that Transport Minister Felix Perera has forwarded the proposal on the new railway track to the Government. "According to the proposal, two lanes of the Southern expressway will be allocated for the new railway track. The new track will not replace the present coastal railway line and will probably be used for an express train service," he said. Meanwhile, the Ministry said that reconstruction of around two miles of the rail track from Kalutara to Alutgama has been completed. "The target of the Railways Department is to renovate the entire rail track to Matara by February 20. However, problems like the shortage of vehicles, backhoes and water pumps have hampered reconstruction activities," he said. |
