Scores of school children dead in Mullaitivu

Vavuniya Group Correspondent

Several hundred school children are believed dead in the Mullaitivu district following the December 26 tsunami disaster, said District Secretary Emelda Sukumar.

Fourteen school buildings in the district have been razed to the ground. This is the highest number of schools recorded destroyed in the North, she said.

New buildings have to be constructed to provide education to students attending these schools. Alternate buildings will be needed to begin the new school term, Sukumar said.

She said work has begun to reconstruct the schools and the district has received the machinery from the government.

They are now taking account of the total damage caused to the school buildings, she said.
