Teachers in hot water

by Manjula Fernando

Four teachers of a leading school in the Gampaha District were apprehended yesterday by the Presidential Investigation Unit Flying Squad for allegedly collecting undue sums of money from parents who brought their children for admission for the new year.

The suspects, all women, upon questioning has admitted that they had collected sums of Rs. 1500 and above from each parent who brought their children to be registered for Grade 1 admission for the 2005 school year.

Under the new circular issued by the Secretary to the Ministry of Education no additional payments can be solicited for school admissions from parents except for the School Development Committee membership fee and facilities fees.

Officers of the squad had discovered that the suspect teachers had collected this money on the instructions of the School Principal. A member of the investigations unit said stern action will be taken against the school authorities if the allegations are proved.

According to him, parents complained that no receipts were issued to them for the payments made.
