by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy Cental Province Minister of Cooperatives, Power and Highways Ediriweera Weerawardhana said that Full Pledged Training Institute would be established at Pallekele to provide a comprehensive training to all employees of cooperatives from General Managers to the minor employees with the view to make the co-operative movement an efficient national service free of corrupt practices. Minister Ediriweera Weerawardhana made that revelation at the ceremonial launching of "Samupakara Prabodani" a programme planned on his concept, at the Mahanuwara Multi Purpose Cooperative Society Kandy. It was organised by Mahanuwara MPCS Chairman Ruwan Tennakoon. Minister Weerawardhana added that as a villager who loved the co-operative movement requested for that portfolio when ministers were appointed to the Provincial Council by the Governor. A committee was appointed to draw up a plan to develop the co-operative movement in the province. Short term, medium term and long term plans were drawn up by that committee. There were more than 200 rural banks, 85 vehicles and trained human resources. The movement could be developed to a viable enterprise. Due to lack of proper management and guidance some societies had been wrecked. The Chairman in one of the societies had even removed the roof of the co-operative building and removed the materials. It was necessary to reorganise the movement. It should not be confined to bring whatever available and distribute them to the people. It is necessary to reorganise it in such a way that it could be of service to the country and the people. It is hoped to introduce rules to ensure that people with some educational background only would be elected to Boards of Directors of co-operative societies. The performance of employees should be evaluated. Unfortunately lack of funds had hindered the work, he added. |
