Golden girl of silver screen gets stellar turn:

Geetha savours Randiya Dahara role

Veteran actress Geetha Kumarasinghe was confident that her latest role in "Randiya Dahara" directed by Udayakantha Warnasooriya is her best performance in recent times.

"This may be my best film," she told Stage and Screen recently. "But I always think that my best performances are yet to come."

Geetha's performance in this film comes after a lapse of two years. "It was after two years, I acted in this film and during that period, I did not even act in a teledrama."

"I did my best. But, it is upto the audience to determine whether I did it. I believe that this film would give a novel experience to the local audience," says Geetha adding that all those who watched the film had told that her performance was the best. She noted that she had to give a lot of efforts to do this film.

Geetha says that in Randiya Dahara, she has to play a very crucial role. "In the film you see a simple character. But I had to portray very complicated character. The audience knows that I am pretending, but the rest of the cast does not know that. So, you have to do it in a very balanced manner."

"The film has many sensitive moments and this would make the film more closer to the people."

In Randiya Dahara, Geetha plays the role of a woman who attempts to cheat the compensation paid by the Government to a Army officer who has gone missing. She pretends she was married to the officer and takes an illegitimate child to the officer's ancestral house where only his old parents live alone.

The film was based on a true story.

Geetha said she first got the idea of this story from a newspaper report. "One day, myself, Udayakantha and several other artistes went on a trip and I told Udaya about this story. After some time, Udaya phoned me and said the script was ready. It was marvellous."

She explained that 50 per cent of the film is completed if the script is good.

Geetha says she was very satisfied about her performance in this film. "I made a great commitment for this film. Also, I am familiar with Udayakantha's rhythm and that also helps to present a better performance. I lived in this character."

"Besides, every character of this film is visible."

In fact, Geetha's previous film "Rajya Sevaya Pinisai" was also directed by Udayakantha and went on to win a number of awards. "Udayakantha is a versatile director who dominates all the actors and never allows others to dictate. He knows what he is doing. He is a good director."

She now wants to be further satisfied about her performance."I have won enough awards and critical acclaim. Now, I want to focus on my performance. I am performing only selected roles as I want to do only lively characters. I am waiting till a good character comes."

So far, she has acted in over 100 films including foreign films such as Japanese, Pakistani etc.

Geetha says she spends most of her time on reading and seeing good movies. "I have read and seen all good movies and studied them."

She is now planning to do a film shortly."But, I have not yet received a good script."

She lamented that she had spent so much money on scripts to do a film. "But I was not satisfied with those scripts and gave up the idea of making a film. The lack of good scripts has also affected the film industry."

She stressed that people are going for movies to enjoy but not to weep. "But certain movies which are branded as realistic films are showing ugly facets of our women. This has given a wrong message to the world. A film personality is a star.

The whole industry has collapsed today due to efforts by certain people who tried to create cinema without stars."

"Cinema is a beautiful thing. I can't understand why they are showing women in an ugly manner. Those certain realistic movies have ruined the beauty of our women. There should be beauty in films so that more people would be attracted to it."

She lamented about the local film industry. "Sri Lanka's film industry has collapsed. Making a film is like waging a war. The director has to do everything.'

She stressed that film medium should be developed as an industry. "Film companies should be established and people should be encouraged to invest money in films. At the same time, loving and romantic films should be created to attract more audience."
