by Sarath Malalasekera The Old Boys Union (OBU) of St. Joseph's College, Colombo has obtained approval from the authorities concerned to rebuild the Diyalagoda Maha Vidyalaya, in the Kalutara District which was totally destroyed following the tsunami. Education is the basic ground that builds the future of any nation and the educational institutions are the grounds that feed wisdom from the younger age up to the maturity of human being. The tail-end of 2004 brought much pain and misery to many in our land when the 'Tsunami' swept away thousands of lives destroying, property including educational institutions,' said St. Joseph's College Rector Fr. Victor Silva. About 59 schools were totally damaged and another 110 partially damaged according to the latest statistics, released by the Government. The task of rebuilding the nation and the country is in our hands. The OBU of St. Joseph's College with the school authorities have decided to contribute its mite to this noble task, Rev. Fr. Victor Silva said. 'We have planned to relocate it and to construct a new two-storied building with eight classrooms. This will certainly brighten the future of the affected children. The estimated cost is around Rupees five million,' Fr. Victor Silva added. |
