IMF pledges future support The visiting First Deputy Managing Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF), Anne O. Krueger said in Colombo yesterday that the IMF will assist the country in whatever way possible to rebuild the nation hit by the recent tsunami. The IMF which has already provided Sri Lanka an extention of repayment schedule and has pledged an emergency credit facility will also help the country to meet the future balance of payment and budgetary needs, she said. "We will help the country with macroeconomic assessments of the impact of the disaster and to maintain macroeconomic stability," she said. Krueger said she visited tsunami affected areas of the country and had meetings with the Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama and other government officials to discuss the scale of challenges the country will have to face in the future and the IMF's role in helping the country to face that challenge. The IMF Board recently approved Sri Lanka's request for extension of repayment expectations of 2005 which is about US$113.5 million. It has also pledged the country with an emergency credit facility of US$ 160 million. |
