Rs. 5,000 monthly pensions for employees who lost jobs due to privatisation by Irangika Range The Ministry of Small and Rural Industries took the initiative recently to grant pensions to 752 employees who lost their jobs due to the privatisation of 48 factories of 10 institutions under the Textile Department in 1980. Minister K.D. Lal Kantha told a ceremony at the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress Auditorium on Tuesday, that each employee who has completed ten years of service at the time of privatisation will be entitled to a monthly pension of Rs. 5,000. The Minister said that the Ministry would also introduce a pension scheme in collaboration with the Pension Department, Ministry of Public Administration and the Treasury for around 4,500 employees who have their service less than ten years at the time of privatisation. The ministry will further promote the local textile industry and it has decided to take over Lanka Fabric Limited which is under the Finance Ministry at present, he said. Deputy Minister Sunil Hadunnetti said that the Ministry has planned to develop the Katubedda area in Moratuwa as a textile industrial village by providing raw materials and infrastructure facilities. The Ministry will also provide Rs. 3 million worth of raw materials to restart the work of the textile industrial village in Maradamunei, in the Kalmunai district which was completely destroyed by the tsunami," he said. |
