Efficient waste management mechanism for tsunami hit areas vital by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The Chamber of Construction Industries (CCI) has made representations to the Government on the immediate need to introduce an efficient waste management mechanism which would in turn facilitate the reconstruction and rehabilitation process in tsunami affected areas. The CCI has conveyed this to the Minister of Advanced Technology and Enterprise Development Rohitha Bogollagama and requested to introduce a strategy on post disaster waste management, The CEO of the Chamber Dakshitha Talgodapitiya said. "This is an important subject that should be addressed by the authorities immediately as piles of waste following a natural disaster have posed significant risks to public health and become a hindrance for the reconstruction process," he said. He said waste management initiatives assist in the re-development of urban infrastructure and provide a positive psychological impact on people by visual improvements of ground conditions. A presentation organised by the Chamber to educate responsible authorities and officials was held on Monday. The presenter, an Engineer and waste management specialist Claus Lillmark has wide experience in this regard in Grenada. He said that a strategy has to be worked out considering assessment, procurement, training health and safety and transport to collect waste and disposal of unusable with the assistance of the relevant government authorities. Chairman CCI Surath Wickramasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Environment P. Lelaratne, Director General Construction and Relief Sivadasan, Chairman, Cement Corporation Gratien Pieris and representatives from the Highways and Housing Authority, also participated. |
