Australian aid for the disabled

Dr. Greg French, Australia's High Commissioner-designate, participated in the re-opening of the Sambodhi Home for Physically and Mentally Challenged in Galle on January 14.

Australia provided the funds to purchase beds and other items to replace those washed away in tsunami, the Australian High Commission said.

"This is an example of Australians working with Sri Lankans to help rebuild the lives of some of the most vulnerable people affected by the tsunami.

It is an important symbol for the beginning of the path towards recovery," Dr. French said.

Buddhist monks conducted a blessing ceremony at the accommodation centre where 38 people were killed.

Deputy Speaker Githanjana Gunawardene, and B. Piyasoma Bodaragama from the Prime Minister's Office represented the Government at the re-opening.

In addition to Australia's emergency relief aid totalling more than A$ 10 million, the Australian High Commission has activated immediate grants to help directly people affected by the disaster in Hikkaduwa, Batticaloa, Sainthamaruthu, Trincomalee, Galle and Kalmunai.

Australia has also been providing medical experts, medical supplies and food to people in the affected areas.
