Baby found entangled in net after tsunami

A two-month old child entangled in a fishing net was found alive on top of a branch of a tree on December 27 morning after being dragged away by the tsunami tidal waves.

Umashi Nivandi who had been crying in the entangled net was rescued by villagers in Dickwella. The villagers had found her mother had been swept away with the tidal waves. The child is now in her mother's sister's custody.

Meanwhile, the statistics unit of the District Secretariat, Matara says 1,216 people had died and 7,406 persons had been displaced due to the tsunami in the Matara district. The displaced stay in 38 refugee centres in seven Divisional Secretariat areas while 404 persons are reported missing and 2,362 houses damaged.

Eleven children had lost both their parents and 86 other children had lost one of their parents (mother or father) as a result of tsunami tragedy on December 26 from the Matara Police Division. These children are all below 15 years.
