Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Telephone : 94 11 2429429 / 94 11 2421181 Fax : 94 11 2429210 Of opportunists, crows and vultures Like crows feeding on a fattened calf there are certain NGOs and groups of individuals financed from abroad, once again stoking flames of war in this troubled isle. In particular, there are four individuals, all opportunists, who have become wealthy by engaging in promoting war and not peace between the Government and the LTTE. One of them was once respected as an erudite scholar whose opinions were respected. Young and vibrant, qualified abroad, he set foot on this fair isle as an educationist. But today has degenerated and joined the dregs of uncivilised organisations talking unadulterated tripe which has failed miserably to influence the people of this country. Another is a well known opportunist who was even suspected of trying to overthrow the government of Mrs. Bandaranaike with little or no impact. This man who poses off as an intellectual took flight when things were getting too hot for him and there were even rumours that he could be arrested any moment for trying to conspire to overthrow the democratically elected government of the day. He seemingly, vanished into thin air but then surfaced in the West, reportedly moving from London, Paris, Europe including Norway, where he is alleged to have made quite a sizeable sum of money by organising seminars, visits by local journalists in support of the LTTE. Obviously it has not taken very long for that country, currently involved in the peace process to discover his machinations and drop him like a hot potato. This loud-mouthed individual is now reportedly feeling his way around among NGOs intent on making a fast buck for his livelihood. There is also a bureaucrat who wielded much power during the previous regime but in his quest to earn a living and also get over his frustration after being a close aide of many a Prime Minister, whom he led up the gum tree and caused their debacles by giving them false hopes and bogus intelligence reports. There are also unconfirmed reports that he was a double agent. The fourth of this group of predators is a joker who held a high post in Defence but was an absolute failure a weak kneed, addle brained clown who not only gave in to the whim's and fancies of the LTTE but even travelled up to Killinochchi to pay pooja to the senior Tigers, in obeisance. This circus performer would have amused the nation but for the fact that he was playing war games and siding with the enemy of the Sri Lankan Government. He was at the beck and call of the Tiger high command and at the click of a finger he danced to their tunes. Today we are paying for the ignorance of this cultural official whose knowledge of Defence and Defence administration was absolutely nil. But for the fact that President Kumaratunga took over the subject of Defence at a very vital point in time to save the nation, this Baby Austin would have sold the country lock, stock and barrel. Today, this assorted group with a common objective of undermining Sri Lanka despite the worst disaster the country has suffered in the tsunami, instead of supporting the Government and the majority of the UNP, including its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and his Deputy Karu Jayasuriya, many NGOs including these little pups with heads larger than footballs, continue on their way merrily. As for the Centre for Policy Alternatives it has been found that they have mentioned a large number of monitors at the last general elections who are said to be fictitious. It is tragic that people of the calibre of Dr. Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu has had to stoop to the level of the Free Media Movement of which it is reported to be a partner and whose directors are first class opportunists who are disgraceful to say the least. They fight with each other, they become friendly all for the sake of filthy lucre. Where, we ask is the transparency so much boasted of by the Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Free Media Movement? It is now three years since the last election but according to reports they are yet to file a statement of accounts as required by law with the Commissioner of Elections. Is this the transparency we ask or is it a blatant cover up? In fact, in the 1999 general elections it has been reported that bogus addresses, names and complaints were made to obtain more funds from their gullible financiers abroad. There are many NGOs in this country who in the name of bringing peace to this troubled nation made billions of dollars by filing bogus reports abroad of their achievements, holding seminars which are nothing but talk shops, cocktail parties and other entertainment. These NGOs own the best Limousines, eat the best of food in the costliest hotels and inveigle themselves with many of the diplomatic community who make rich pickings for these vultures. And these puerile pundits have the brass and the temerity to criticise the Government as being sluggish, corrupt and inert. This last is a severe NGO bellyache caused by the fact that the President herself is monitoring the funds received to ensure that they go into the right hands. This will no doubt cause the nemesis of the high living NGO community who love themselves more and Sri Lanka less. |
