IESL designs houses for tsunami hit areas by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The Institution of Engineers of Sri Lanka (IESL) has designed a range of houses suitable for reconstruction in tsunami affected areas. Executive Secretary IESL Engineer Russel De Zilwa said that IESL attended the first meeting of the Special Task Force recently on relocation and rehabilitation by the Minstry of Urban Development and Water Supply and these designs were made available to the UDA following the meeting. The IESL has also been providing structural designs and details for houses designed by other organisations and they are now available through the UDA. De Zilwa said these houses do not fall into what is now commonly referred to as 'low cost houses' as they are designed to be permanent residences constructed in planned clusters in UDA approved areas. These are the most appropriate structural designs concepts and structural designs for multi-storey flats, he said. The design of a modular toilet block complete with septic tank, soakage pit and water supply is also available for construction in the temporary housing scheme for displaced persons. Details on these designs could be obtained from the IESL or the UDA, he said. |
