by Sarath Malalasekera Deputy Inspector General of Police J. Thangavelu, head of the Police Legal Division, was detained yesterday morning by LTTE cadres at Karadavaru for over two hours. According to DIG Thangavelu, he was returning from Ampara via Batticaloa after distributing tsunami relief to the needy in those areas, he was stopped at an Army checkpoint on his way to Badulla. The LTTE checked his bag and baggage including his Police and national identity cards and detained him without allowing him to proceed to Badulla. While he was being kept near the LTTE checkedpoint at Karadavaru, the DIG had inquired from the LTTE cadres why he was detained. The angry DIG Thangavelu had told the LTTE cadres to allow him to proceed to Badulla or allow him to return to Colombo or KILL him. After about two hours and ten minutes another LTTE cadre had come on a motorcycle and asked DIG Thnagavelu to proceed to Badulla. DIG Thangavelu after returning to Colombo had complained to IGP Chandra Fernando about the incident and had said, he would not have got into difficulties in the hands of the LTTE cadres at Karadavaru, if the Army personnel, who checked him earlier, had told him that, " I am proceeding towards the uncleared area." "I will bring this matter to the notice of senior officers of the Army also," DIG Thangavelu said. |
