Houses for tsunami displaced families: PM Thihagoda group correspondent The people displaced by the tsunami will be provided houses soon. Under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's guidance and advice, all political parties have united to rebuild Sri Lanka, said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural project of reconstructing Matara in the aftermath of the tsunami, the Prime Minister said "The people of Ruhuna who inherit a Buddhist civilization are renowned for their historical struggle to live by their own efforts, but today they have turned destitute due to the tsunami catastrophe. We pledge each victim family a house of their own and a dignified means of living." The Premier said that today in addition to our existing problems, we are confronted with an onerous task of rehabilitating the country following the tsunami cataclysm and therefore we have to shed all our petty differences and act in unison to rebuild the nation. This is not the time to brush aside all important issues and hang over a problem of 100 metres when this issue is already laid down under the Coast Conservation Act of 1987, the provisions of which were adhered to under each successive Governments. The Government will follow a policy that will ensure the safety and welfare of the fishery community, emphasized the Premier. Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Chandrasena Wijesinhe, Deputy Minister of Health Mahindayapa Abeywardena, Matara district MP Jinadasa Kitulegoda and Matara Mayor Nimal de Silva also spoke. |
