President stern on corruption in schools

Several instances of corruption and dishonesty among school authorities have been brought to the notice of the President's Office in the recent past.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Friday directed the Ministry of Education which is under her purview, to immediately interdict the Principal of Maliyadeva Girls School in Kurunegala.

The directive was issued based on the findings of the Presidential Investigative Unit. This officer is alleged to have been involved in fraudulent acts in the admission of students to the Grade 1 classes at this school, the Office of the President said in a release.

President Kumaratunga also directed the Deputy Principal of Prince of Wales, Moratuwa be interdicted. There have been several charges against this officer.

He is alleged to have been inebriated during school hours and condoned the showing of pornographic films to students.

The Presidential Investigative Unit has been directed to investigate the admission process in certain National Schools and submit a comprehensive report to the President before February 10, 2005.
