Diploma in Journalism Course: Closing date for applications postponed

The closing date for applications to the one-year Diploma in Journalism Course conducted by the Sri Lanka College of Journalism has been postponed to Tuesday, 15 February 2005 due to the tsunami tragedy. The Sri Lanka College of Journalism has decided to postpone the closing date for applications so as to help in the uplifting and rebuilding of the lives of innocent young women and men devastated by the recent disaster.

The one-year Diploma in Journalism Course will commence on April 04, 2005.

Instructions will be in all three languages - Sinhala, Tamil and English. The three group of 15 students each will also acquire skills through English Language, computer, general knowledge and new media classes.

This course provides an ideal starting point for a career in journalism as well as providing, for those already in the media industry, an opportunity to obtain a career enhancing proficiency. Students graduating from this course should be able to gain employment within newspaper industry.

Teaching takes place at the College premises located in 65/5, Ward place Colombo 7. Core subjects includes news journalism, feature writing, investigative journalism, photojournalism, design and layout etc. Media law, local and central government and the ethics of journalism all play important part in the syllabus as do the principles of sub editing, design and page planning.

The syllabus consists of individual modules, each with assignments, which must be completed satisfactorily with guidance and practical criticism provided by the tutors at every stage.

All lectures are given by specialists in their field-most of whom are experienced journalists. Students are required to have a sound working knowledge of Sinhala/Tamil/English and be able to work on their own as well as small groups.

The course consists of: Regular lecturers on journalism topics, Regular lectures on general knowledge topics, Group and personal tutorials, Written assignments, including feature articles and news reports, Visits to Parliament, Criminal and magistrate courts, An introduction to QuarkXpress.

Student will not be able to combine their one-year Diploma course with other part-time employment, which would only disrupt their study commitments.

The Sri Lanka College of Journalism has been established under the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI), which has a broad mandate to promote a competent, professional and independent yet accountable media.

The Sri Lanka College of Journalism set up with funding from Sweden and Norway works very closely with Swedish Institute for Further Education of Journalists (FOJO) a reputed international journalism-training institute.

The basic qualifications we are looking for are three A/L passes in one sitting and:

* Sinhala medium - Distinction in Sinhala at the O/L with a credit pass in English

* Tamil medium - Distinction in Tamil at the O/L with a credit pass in English

* English medium - Distinction in English at the O/L with credit pass in Sinhala or Tamil, states Tilak Jayaratne, Director, Sri Lanka College of Journalism in a press release.
