BCIS unveils updated menu of English courses for professionals

Professional people interested in polishing their English language skills now have an updated menu of courses to choose from at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies, with the next intake now being prepared for early March.

"We're very excited about this new line-up," said Jin Ranallia, a consultant assigned by the US State Department to help establish the BCIS's English programme. "These are quality courses, combining up-to-date methods and materials with quality instruction. We're anticipating a very good response from participants".

The centre's English Language Training Programme now features three courses: Effective Public Speaking, which focuses on the skills needed to talk confidently and successfully in front of a group, Spoken English for Professional Communication, which strengthens participants' skills in using English for meetings and other workplace situations; and English Writing for Professionals, which trains students to become more effective writers of reports, email, memos and letters.

Applications are now being accepted for all courses and start dates have been set for early March. The public-speaking course will meet on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. - 12 noon, while the other two courses meet on weekdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. - the spoken English course on Wednesdays and Fridays and the writing course on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

In each course, qualified instructors will deliver hands-on instruction through realistic tasks and activities. Class sizes are limited to 25 to maximize individual attention and allow for detailed feedback on students' efforts. All lessons will be conducted in the comfortable lecture rooms of the new BCIS building located on the BMICH premises.

The English Langauge Training Programme, inaugurated in 2003, has been established to help people working in the private, public and semi-government sectors upgrade their abilities to use English for professional purposes. It is a joint project between the BCIS and the US Department of State.

Interested parties can visit the ELTP office at the BMICH during normal business hours Tuesdays, Saturdays, or obtain information by calling 2691131 x 210 or sending an e-mail to BCIS-ELTP@yahoo.com.
